I wrote the verses one afternoon at the piano in my home. It had only been a few months since my best friend Jorge and his brother Andr\u00e9s had left this earth. I kept having flashes of images that made me cry &#8211; I felt devastated and very alone. A year later, Jimena Est\u00edbaliz invited me to do an artist residency with her at Casa Chavela, Chavela Vargas&#8217; home in Tepoztl\u00e1n.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Those days were truly magical and deeply inspiring. We read a lot about Chavela &#8211; about her relationship with life and death, with alcohol, with her friends and with love. I remember being in the garden, facing the mountain, as I started playing through some chords. Those verses I had written for my departed friends came back to me, and I truly believe that Chavela&#8217;s spirit &#8211; and her way of finding beauty even in the darkest places &#8211; was with me as I found the chorus and the missing images. She was the one who said: &#8220;How beautiful death must be, if no one has ever come back from there&#8230;&#8221; There were many ideas floating around for the production, but I remember being in Montr\u00e9al with Daniel Bitr\u00e1n, the engineer for this album. At the end of our first recording day, we captured this song &#8211; just guitar and voice &#8211; almost as a placeholder. We never expected it to be the final take, let alone the first one.&#8221; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;But it was a magical moment for both of us, and it was immediately clear that this had to be the foundation we would build on. We later brought in Owen Pallett once more to create an orchestral arrangement. In this case, the process was quite open-ended &#8211; the only direction was to follow <a href=\"https:\/\/livemusicblog.com\/blogs\/music-blog\/exploring-emotional-depth-music-contemporary-society\/\">the emotional dynamics of the voice<\/a>. Back in Mexico, we decided to double the guitar with a muted piano.
