With production support from Luke Sital-Singh and Alex Farrar, the record explores themes of aging, identity, and emotional transparency through a lens both nostalgic and defiant. The release of \u201cPast It\u201d and \u201cLoose Ends\u201d offers a compelling preview of the duality that defines the album\u2019s emotional and musical core.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to a press release from Keaton Henson&#8217;s management, &#8220;Past It&#8221; and &#8220;Loose Ends&#8221; The tracks will be the last to come ahead of the albums release on 21<sup>st<\/sup>\u00a0Nov via Play It Again Sam.<br \/><br \/><em>Parader\u00a0<\/em>marks Henson\u2019s ninth studio album and his first since 2024\u2019s\u00a0<em>Somnambulant Cycles<\/em>. It also follows his recent return single \u201cLazy Magician\u201d (co-written by Ratboys\u2019 Julia Steiner), which was released in July, earning support from the likes of Rolling Stone UK, Crack, The Line Of Best Fit, The New Cue, Stereogum, Under The Radar, and GoldFlakePaint, who said it hinted\u00a0<em>\u201cat a bold new chapter on the horizon; a restless and romantic re-defining.\u201d<\/em><br \/><br \/>Whereas that single nodded to Henson beginning to shed the \u201cquiet boy\u201d persona that has defined much of his career \u2013 if we\u2019re to omit his myriad efforts composing for film and theatre, an electronic side project, his classical offerings, his illustration and writing work \u2013 the new album sees him fully embracing the grunge-infused sounds of his youth. This was expanded upon with his last single \u201cInsomnia\u201d, which was announced alongside the new album and saw Henson entwining aching self-observation with a defiance he terms as \u201cmusical snark\u201d.<br \/><br \/>Today\u2019s new songs \u201cPast It\u201d and \u201cLoose Ends\u201d capture the two ends of Henson\u2019s journey both personally and musically across the forthcoming record. The first, a nostalgia-soaked evaluation of his career as a musician, is delivered through a crackling, lo-fi hum reminiscent of Christian Lee Hutson or Phoebe Bridgers. While awash with self-doubt, the self-reflective daydream is permeated by an understanding of his own needs. \u201c<em>This one\u2019s a bit meta,\u201d\u00a0<\/em>says Henson. \u201cIt\u2019s me looking at ageing and growing older as a musician. But also reflecting on the whole idea of a 37-year-old man singing the kinds of songs I sing, especially the way I am on this album. Sometimes you can catch your reflection while writing songs and I have these thoughts, usually ending with wondering if anyone will even hear it.\u201d<br \/><br \/>The latter of the two tracks \u201cLoose Ends\u201d, sees him once again revisiting that musical snark from the last single, carrying a American garage-rock undercurrent in the lurking distortion and its combative rhythm, the taunting cry of \u201c<em>Oh me, oh my<\/em>\u201d bears <a href=\"https:\/\/livemusicblog.com\/blogs\/music-blog\/exploring-emotional-depth-music-contemporary-society\/\">an argumentative edge in its sardonic dark tone<\/a>.\u00a0\u201cIt\u2019s referential of music from my youth,\u201d\u00a0continues Henson.\u00a0\u201cThe kind of early 2000s rock bands from America. It\u2019s pretty sarcastic. It\u2019s about feeling like you\u2019re guilting someone into staying with you. Since emerging with his debut record\u00a0<em>Dear\u2026<\/em>\u00a0in 2010, Henson has garnered critical acclaim for his mastery at weaving heart-on-sleeve vulnerability into emotionally poignant, folk-tinged outpourings. No stranger to anxiety\u2019s heavy weight, he\u2019s earned a devoted fan base from a self-imposed distance \u2013 shying from the spotlight to offer up the finite part of himself he\u2019s willing to give away.\u00a0<em>\u201cSadness I suppose\u201d\u00a0<\/em>he once confessed,<em>\u00a0\u201cis a feeling of which I have an excess of.\u201d<\/em><br \/><br \/>What unravels across\u00a0<em>Parader<\/em>\u2019s 12 tracks is an introspective autopsy of time as it distorts and folds to alter and inhabit the songwriter\u2019s present.\u00a0\u201cThere are these disjointed snapshots,\u201d\u00a0he explains,\u00a0\u201cmemories across time popping up amongst this collection of thoughts about what it feels like to be this age and a musician.\u201d<br \/><br \/>These glimpses of Henson\u2019s past, whether channelled in his lyrics or musically exposed in sneering riffs, might start to defy preconceptions of our reclusive balladeer. In a nod to his tender tone, Henson\u2019s oft-met comparison to Elliott Smith, while The Independent once dubbed him the \u201cBritish Jeff Buckley\u201d, but, like the aforementioned pair, his early beginnings also took root in far heavier sounds. \u201cPrior to being a mostly quiet musician I played in hardcore and emo bands,\u201d\u00a0he shares. It\u2019s these snapshots of time that run amok on\u00a0<em>Parader<\/em>, nostalgic distortions splintering the timeline\u2019s once-linear path.<br \/><br \/>To piece\u00a0<em>Parader<\/em>\u00a0together, Henson collaborated with a wealth of talent who could harness these influences and bring them into the light. Production duties were split between Luke Sital-Singh, who Henson soon discovered\u00a0\u201cgrew up in a similar area at a similar time, so our reference points were the same,\u201d\u00a0and Alex Farrar (Wednesday\/Snail Mail):\u00a0<em>\u201cthe king of that loud, snarky American DIY sound.\u201d<\/em>\u00a0The intimately tender \u201cFurl\u201d also found a first-time co-writer in his wife, artist and musician Danielle Fricke, while Henson worked with Ratboys\u2019 Julia Steiner on the earlier mentioned \u201cLazy Magician\u201d A downtrodden duet that unfolds like a haunting daydream before winding guitars soar, Henson explains:\u00a0\u201cJulia\u2019s voice is so evocative of that sound to me, it reminds me of when I first heard Rilo Kiley. She has a lot of the suburban magic-realism of the American bands I loved back then.&#8221;<br \/><br \/>From early days in London and his career as a visual artist \u2013 illustrating for the likes of Enter Shikari, Dananananaykroyd, and Oli Sykes\u2019 Drop Dead \u2013 to the overwhelm of musical renown and his retreat from LA, to the here and now; 37 years old, married, chopping wood in the quietude of his countryside home, there is a wealth of life experience for Henson to draw from. Yet in this moment, he comes somewhat full circle with apparitions of a young Keaton loitering outside the local skate shop, a teenager catching American punk bands in the suburbs of London.\u00a0\u201cIt\u2019s definitely pulling from the things I listened to when I was a young, but they\u2019re being spat out through the lens of me and my career now. The album is like a weird \u2018me\u2019 version of that stuff musically.\u201d<br \/><br \/>Under the weight of this poignant introspection, it\u2019s hard to ignore that Henson\u2019s ruminations also harbor traces of earned experience.<em>\u00a0<\/em>Of the aching exasperation recurring throughout\u00a0<em>Parader<\/em>, Henson notes,\u00a0\u201cthere\u2019s a lot of frustration in the record at not having conquered life, or my often mutinous brain\u201d\u00a0And yet, it is this honesty, earnestly dispatched through heartwrenching outpourings, that make the record feel quintessentially Keaton Henson. However,<em>\u00a0Parader\u00a0<\/em>has legitimate confidence. \u201cIt\u2019s not me pretending to be anything I\u2019m not,\u201d Henson explains. \u201cI think it\u2019s just me accepting that part of me\u00a0<u>is<\/u>\u00a0this. It&#8217;s louder and brasher, but not from a performative point of view. Maybe I&#8217;m just accepting that that is all part of me as well.\u201d<br \/><br \/>As the record closes out, final track \u201cPerformer\u201d brings us full circle to the question of the album\u2019s title \u2013 the two intrinsically linked. As he sings,\u00a0\u201cI\u2019ll show my scars to you no matter who you are,\u201d\u00a0Henson acknowledges the emotional pains of being a musician in the public eye, with the relentless march of time a grudging ally in delivering his stories:\u00a0\u201cI am the parader.
